Dissonant Convergence, The 21 st Century Security Crisis: As the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Pakistan earthquake, the London subway bombings and the destruction of New Orleans illustrate, planetary citizens face an unprecedented security crisis: most government and business leaders are still in denial about global warming, and particularly its security implications (both near-term and long-term), the failed “war on terrorism” has only aggravated the very real and imminent danger of attacks on civilian population throughout the world, the threat of bird flu pandemic increases every day, the identity theft and other cyber crimes that ruin finances and destroy businesses are on the rise, etc. Indeed, the first decade of the 21 st Century has brought us into greater peril than we have ever faced. Tales From The Shadows of Cyber Space: This presentation explores the evolution of cyber crime as a global issue over the past decade. It examines the growth of cyber bank robbery, cyber extortion, identity theft, economic espionage, denial of service, cyber vandalism, cyber stalking and other criminal endeavors. The presentation includes a compelling timeline, explores fascinating case studies and also provides real-world cyber security recommendations for governments, businesses and families.

The Struggle for The Freedom of The Internet: In many countries, and particularly in the USA, the Internet has become the best and most reliable resource for cutting edge news and opinion about politics, geopolitics and the environment for a growing segment of the population. In some of these countries, this turn to the Internet is the result of tight government control over established mediums, i.e., television, newspapers and radio. In the USA, the growing reliance on the Internet is the result of tight corporate control (i.e., the media monopolies). This presentation looks at disturbing trends in government and business cooperation in limiting privacy on the Internet, legislation that would make gaining and optimizing access to the Internet more expensive and therefore more exclusive, and other serious efforts to commercialize and curtail the freedom and egalitarianism vital to the life of the Internet.

Electronic Voting = Information Warfare, Bitter Lessons from The Land of the “Free”: Many countries throughout the world are embracing democratic principles, (e.g., fair elections and a free press). Many countries throughout the world are also embracing Information Age technologies to revolutionize their infrastructures. But the intersection of democratic principles and Information Age technologies is a dangerous one. The post-election chaos in Florida in 2000, and Ohio in 2004, brought to light the fragility of the electoral process in “the world’s greatest democracy.” This presentation elucidates the numerous cyber security issues involved in electronic voting, examines some related struggles for electoral fairness throughout the USA from Florida and Ohio to New Hampshire and Alaska. It also articulates the dangers and opportunities for emerging democracies, and provides suggestions on how to “get it right.”

Why Security and Intelligence Professionals Should Advocate the Millennium Goals: This presentation explores the inter-relationship between global security threats (e.g., organized crime, terrorism, racial and ethnic cleansing, religious extremism, etc.) and global social ills (e.g., poverty, lack of education, environmental degradation, exploitation of women and children, etc.). It highlights the urgent need to address global social ills in order to mitigate global security threats, and explains how the UN Millennium Goals provide the means to do so. Tangible ways to integrate a Millennium Goals campaign into overall security strategies for organizations are also offered.
